Can You Bring a Dog on a Train in Melbourne?

Yes — dogs are allowed on Melbourne trains, but only under strict rules (including lead and muzzle requirements).

While dogs are technically allowed on Melbourne trains, many owners quickly realise the real challenge isn’t the rules — it’s whether their dog is calm, controlled and safe in a busy environment.

Key Overview

  • ✅ Yes — dogs are allowed on Melbourne Metro trains, but only under strict conditions (lead + muzzle or secure carrier)
  • ⚠️ Rules differ across transport types (trams and buses are more restrictive)
  • 🐕 Most dogs aren’t naturally prepared for busy environments like trains, crowds and noise
  • 😬 Behaviour issues (pulling, reactivity, anxiety) are the biggest reason trips go wrong
  • 🏡 In-home dog training can help prepare your dog for real-world situations like public transport
  •

Is Your Dog Actually Ready for Public Transport?

If your puppy or adult dog

  • Pulls or lunges on lead
  • Reactive to strangers, dogs, or noise
  • Struggles to stay calm in new environments
  • Won’t settle in busy places

If you said yes to even one of these, taking your dog on a train can quickly become stressful — for both of you.

At Focus On Dog Training, we specialise in in-home dog training across Melbourne’s Western Suburbs, helping dogs build calm behaviour in real-world situations like walks, visitors, and public environments.

Your Dog & Melbourne Trains (Metro)

Dogs are able to travel with you on a metropolitan Melbourne train as long as they are on a lead and wearing a fitted muzzle.

If your dog is not muzzle-trained, please consider a session with a Qualified Dog Trainer to condition your dog to the muzzle in a calm, one-on-one training environment.

When travelling on a train with your dog, as an owner, you must also

  • Clean up after your dog
  • Ensure your dog keeps aisles & seats clear
  • Have control over your dog at all times
  • Avoid peak times. See PTV for hours

Melbourne Trams & Buses (Metro)

A dog is able to travel with you on any Melbourne Metro tram or bus if in a suitable animal container. A small crate is an ideal solution to help dogs feel safe on either a tram or a train.

V/Line Regional Services & Dogs

A dog may travel on a V/Line service if in a suitable carrier. This carrier must allow sufficient space for your dog to move around, be well-ventilated, clean, and provide access to water. The V/Line website provides a full breakdown table of carrier requirements.

Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on V/Line coach services.

A poorly prepared train trip can be overwhelming for your dog — and stressful for everyone around you. The right training makes all the difference.
